Pool is Open!

The pool finally hit the 86 degree mark, which is the coolest temperature I can tolerate. The chemicals are all balanced; it is clean, and ready to dive into. Two years ago I lost thirty pounds swimming every day. I would swim laps back and forth across the pool for thirty minutes to an hour and a half…weekends included. We don’t skinny dip…we chunky dunk.

Last year I had a bout with frozen shoulder, adhesive capsulitis. It was too painful to swim and I spent the summer in physical therapy. I also gained back ten of the thirty pounds I had lost.

My eating habits and food choices are good, but psychotropic meds and sedentary lifestyle don’t help. I use a glycemic index diet. It is a bit stricter than Atkins in some ways, but more lenient in others. You can have carbs, but they must meet 55 or less on the glycemic index (unless they have an extremely high nutrient content, like sweet potatoes and watermelon). I have used it so long that I know now what is allowed and disallowed, so it is easy to follow.

Almost all writers are plagued by sedentary lifestyle. During the winter and early spring, I was seated at the computer most all day, and into the night. I have decided to ride my bike to the produce market once or twice each week. It is too hot to walk.

We sold our treadmill and stationary bikes. They were taking up too much room and were not being put to use…despite being under the air-conditioning.

I do a significant amount of housework and gardening, which keeps me moving, but probably doesn’t burn off the calories that I would like to burn. I can’t deny that I am a bit lazy when it comes to workout routine discipline, but I do enjoy swimming.

What are you doing to stay in shape this season? Many Florida homes have pools.

Do you have a gym nearby?

Wish me luck!

    1. Ha! My idea of swimming is to leisurely dog paddle from one end to the other and back again. But it is movement I don’t get all winter!

Cold drink beside the pool is always nice 😉 Greg uses it that way. He never swims, but when he is working in the shop all day…at the end of it he will jump in, clothes and all, to cool off.

  1. Good luck! It’s nice you have a pool so easy to access.

Although I exercise every morning to fitness DVDs, I still move around a lot during the day despite spending most of it on my laptop. My $40 treadmill shelf is wonderful. I just pop my laptop on it and walk at a slow speed. Gets me moving and is much better on my back than sitting all day. Of course, if you got rid of your treadmill, it makes adding the shelf a little trickier. 😉

    1. I tried putting my iPad on my treadmill shelf, thinking if I watched netflix or something I would walk…didn’t work for me. I have never liked running in place. I want to be out in the sunshine and the breezes. being outdoors is part of what makes it pleasurable to me. I am spoiled.

        1. For me…I say when it is cooler. It gets so hot here in summer, but not like Georgia. At least we have the sea breezes most of the time. In Georgia, the summers are hot and humid and the air does not move, just sort of hangs there, dripping off of your hot sweaty body and suffocating you.

  2. I’m back in the gym and very thankful for it. After a couple of rounds with back issues, I don’t take my exercise routine for granted anymore!
BTW, the chunky dunk comment made me giggle 🙂

  3. I plead the fifth.
This summer, I promise to w.a.l.k. to unfreeze my butt back to life and from my chair.
I broke an elliptical machine (it wore out) and haven’t replaced it from over two years ago. Someone gave me a stationery bike and I look at it once in a while. 😉

  4. How do I try to keep fit? Pilates on Tuesday, PowerPump with weights on Friday and up and down stairs everyday. I’m the fidgety type, but since I’ve warmed the seat of my writing chair more this past year, I have to fight the pounds.

The pool looks cool – lucky you! 🙂

    1. Pilates and PowerPump! That’s more than I could muster. The best time to get in teh pool is after the sun starts to set, but the mosquitoes come out then, and we aren’t screened. Citronella tiki torches help some.

  5. Good luck with the swimming! I go to a gym nearly every day, but I have to do classes because I get too bored trying to work out on my own, although I’ll do a few things like abs.I don’t like treadmills and ellipticals. I do spin classes, Zumba, boot camp type class. I was doing all this before, but stepped it up after breast cancer. I’m probably the most fit I’ve ever been, although not as thin as I was when I was younger.

Your pool looks lovely! We actually had to flip our heat back on yesterday! UGH. I don’t know if I’d swim or not. . .but I do enjoy sitting by a pool and reading a book. 🙂

    1. Swimming is about the only thing I can stay self disciplined to do every day. I started to join a gym this past winter but was afraid I would spend the money on it and never use it.

I enjoy sitting on the back porch in the shade looking out over the pool and gardens and reading a book. My favorite place 😉

    1. We didn’t even run our hot tub this past summer it is so expensive. We only used it four or five times in the season and it just wasn’t worth the cost. I couldn’t imagine what it would cost to heat a pool all year unless you could go solar, and that’s expensive also.

  6. Good luck! I shall live vicariously through you and your swimming pool. It’s still in the 40’s – low 50s here! 🙂 I try to walk every day – but failing that (because it’s cold, and raining!) I have an elliptical stair-stepper. I pop in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and go to town!

    1. My doctor suggested weights and cardio. I did yoga with my daughter for a while when we lived together. I enjoyed it, but was a few years younger and a few pounds lighter then. It would probably help to get back into that 🙂
